Benefits of an External Hard Drive

Today, when people access the internet, their computers are exposed to such security threats as viruses, Trojan horses, and spyware. Even when users have installed a thorough security application, there are still risks that their computer can be become infected by a harmful virus which could damage or destroy computer files. One of the best ways of protecting your files and other information on your computer is to use an external hard drive.

An external hard drive sits outside the computer in its own enclosure. This portable hard drive connects to the computer using an interface cable. The cable allows the computer and external hard drive to communicate so that data can be transferred between each one. The most common types of interfaces are Firewire and USB. The development of external hard drives has greatly benefited computer users.

Below is a list of the benefits of using an external hard drive:

1. Computers can transfer all of their computer data such as documents, PDF files, spreadsheets, programs, disk images, applications, movies, videos, and MP3s to the external hard drive. The memory in external hard drives can range 120 GB - 500 GB. By backing up computer data on a separate external hard drive, the user will not lose any data if something happens to their computer that causes all of their information to be lost. The data on the external hard drive will remain secure and safe.

2. External hard drives are lightweight, portable and function on a plug and play mode. Computer with Firewire or USB capability will recognize the hard drive as a storage device and assign a letter indicating that it is a device for storing computer data. You can take the external hard drive anywhere as it is easy to carry. You just have to plug in the interface cable and make your chosen data available. An external hard drive can be used by anyone on-the-go such as students and business professionals who spend a lot of time traveling.

3. External hard drives provide a safe and easy way to back up personal information such as photos, medical history, financial information, business information, music files, graphic documents, music files…etc. These hard drives have password encryption features for added security.

4. since external hard drives are able to store a large amount of data, there is enough space to store complete operating systems. Therefore, external hard drives make efficient boot up devices to restore an operating system in the event of a security issue or malfunction.

External hard drives are becoming quite inexpensive and when using a USB, they can be connected to just about any computer. They can also be stored in safes and other secure places. A few of the familiar manufacturers of high-powered external hard drives include: Fujitsu, Maxtor, Transcend, Seagate, and Western Digital. Because there are so many threats to a computer, it has become essential to protect the data on a computer by storing the information on an external hard drive. It will give you peace of mind knowing your important information is protected.
