VIDEO TRANSCRIPT
Carrie Webb: A question here from Tim Cole for you. Tim Cole says, “I love your show. I learned about it through Miro and this is my first time joining you on the show.” So thank you Tim Cole, welcome. “I hope I didn’t miss anything today. My question is I just turned my desktop completely to Ubuntu Intrepid. Can you share a Window’s printer with Ubuntu like how Windows can share a printer?” Robbie Ferguson: Now I know you’re just asking me yes or no questions so the immediate straight answer is yes. Linux includes Samba Printing so you’re able to print to an SMB Shared Network Printer. So if you’ve got a printer connected to your Windows computer, you can actually access that from within Linux. It’s very, very easy. I don’t have a shared printer on my network that I can show you but basically, under System Administration Printing, you can add a new printer if it’s not automatically detected which often happens to be the case. And you can get to New, Printer, it’s going to search for printers whether they’re the local or remote. It’s really in to it and it really is easy. I don’t have to really walk you through it. Now, you can see even my Brother MFC-6490 which is a wireless printer has been detected at that IP address. So, I could install that easily if I wanted to or I can go Windows Printer via Samba. So in this case, I’m going to send my authentication details if there’s a password on it and I’m going to set basically the server name or the computer name and on the printers. So, even browse the network, it’s all straightforward. Everything can be done just by, you know you can click that browse button and go through. It’s very, very simple and the answer is yes, absolutely.
