VIDEO TRANSCRIPT
Male: So, if you have to look at a screenshot here which again just outlines the page tends to appear at the top and at the sides in terms of the screen architectures as well and the organic, the free, the stuff we’re going to be talking about appears in the middle and being Yahoo, Microsoft that has the same side structure to help orientate us. Some of the topics we can discuss when we are comparing organic versus paid, the advantage of organic is that it’s where most people looking, it’s where most people are going to click which is good for us. The disadvantage really is it’s actually reasonably difficult to rank well in the free results because everybody knows that where the action is, that’s where a lot of the values that we had therefore it can take quite a lot of time, not necessarily cost, but the time work in order to optimize one site and appear in the top part of the first page of your target phrases. The flipside of that is paid search is actually relatively straightforward because if you’re willing to pay, you can appear the number one search result tomorrow. It’s not a problem. You don’t really have to put any ground working, there's no time log, if you’re willing to pay the price per click, you can rank tomorrow. Now, the challenge there is that obviously that’s a short term solution because the second you stop paying, you disappear from the search results. Whereas free, once you’re optimized, you know you got a good six, nine months before anything really changes. You will stay optimized and you’ll stay quite high, for a reasonable amount of time. So, ordinarily one would say your long term strategy would be to use search engine optimization to be a strong as you can be in the natural results because that’s the gift to keeps on going as it work and while with ordinarily use paid to plug gaps because you don’t need a long-term once you’re relying on it, is the main aspect of your search strategy because it just keeps costing, costing, costing. Participant: Would the paid search fit into natural ranking, so the more the paid once are clicked on, does that actually give the natural rankings more in the long run or— Male: That’s not that I’m aware of in Google I’ve never stay to that because if they were then there will be commercial advantage to view the clients to have a commercial relationship paid search wise with Google. Participant: That’s not like a back link, it’s just— Male: No. There’s no natural search advantage to having paid search companion aware of. Although, I’ll be talking about in the paid search of course, that is an advantage to your paid search campaign if your site is optimized for natural search which we’ll talk about in that session. Participant: Thank you. Why did you say early six months? Male: Arbitrary time period. Well what I really mean is that if your site is optimized for your target key phrases and nothing in the market place changes, no one else is doing the optimization, you’re number one then you will stay a number one in terms of purposes. I only said six months as an example because that maybe how long it takes other people to do the equivalent work that you just done to optimize their sites and eventually over take you. But it’s unlikely that they will be able to do that amount of work very, very quickly. And also this is something we’ll talk about in a moment. Search engines need little bit of time even once you’ve done the work to be aware of the fact that you’ve done the work because they don’t visit your site ordinarily on a daily basis to check what’s happening, they may well only visit once every three months. If that’s the case of course, then after three months, absolutely nothing will change until they visited your site and found out that either your site or competitor site had go lots of new content that had been optimized in the way that we’re going to discuss. Anything else? Participant: Yeah, I was just going to ask that question. So, I’ll maybe jumping ahead here a little bit, but in terms of the spiders, the people like Google used they will typically only come and visit your site once every three months or something like that. Male: That would be a very typical average cycle, but you can do things to encourage them to visit more often which we’ll talk about. But to be honest, the main thing that one does is if you post lots of content regularly. The spider—if you don’t happened to know what a spider is, relax, that’s the next couple of slides. The spider will realize. I’ve been here for three months, but you’ve been posting everyday, let’s come back next week again because it’s obviously worth my while as a search engine to be appraised of this new content. So the way in which you encourage spiders to visit you more often is by posting lots and lots of content. And indeed, the more links that you have to your site, again, something we’ll talk about later, that will also encourage spiders to find your site more regularly when they happened to be spidering a difference site. So, that’s another way that you can encourage spiders to come to your site. As I say, don’t worry if you don’t happen to know what a spider is. That’s exactly what we’re going to be coming to in a moment.
