Erick Michielson: How is the change in printing online media market place affected your career and the choices available to you as a writer. Rachel Lehmann-Haupt: Well, I've have been working six years on a book and you know, if you like sort of break it down with the hourly wage on that is, it's not a lot. Erick Michielson: Right. Rachel Lehmann-Haupt: But you know, you have this product to finally and you have this you piece of work—art or whatever you want to call it that you’ve created. And then people come to you, you know especially in your new websites that are launching or even—and they say, we can't afford to pay you, you know or can you write a column for us for free? And so it's very frustrating to me in a way that content online is something that is not valued as something that should be paid for. Erick Michielson: Yes. Rachel Lehmann-Haupt: And so I think it's really hard for younger people that are coming into the field now because I think you have to do a lot of writing for free. Erick Michielson: Right. Rachel Lehmann-Haupt: And you know myself was published in the Times and New York Times and you know published in London Times and published in the News week and— Erick Michielson: In many places. Rachel Lehmann-Haupt: And an outside Magazine and Vogue and you know a million places that you know they say to me still, can you write for free? You know, that’s hard and so there's a massive economic problem now and that journalism needs to you know be fixed and needs to be new business models and— I mean I sort of look at it as like my core passion is writing books and articles you know feed the research— Erick Michielson: That’s true. Rachel Lehmann-Haupt: And then the nurse is kind of other revenue stream that’s going to be kind of producing events and you know doing editorial consulting and editing that is sort—it's like a Yin and Yang thing. Erick Michielson: Right. Rachel Lehmann-Haupt: It's kind of actually really nice when you spent a lot of times sort of isolated and individually doing reporting and then sitting down and writing to do something that’s involves producing because it involves putting a lot of pieces together and working with a lot of people.
