VIDEO TRANSCRIPT
Joel Wright: Entertainment 2.0 for me at least I think is about creating product for any screen for consumers in a fashion which they want to consume it. Vince Thompson: Hello and welcome to Dog and Pony where innovators come to broadcast their business. I'm Vince Thompson. Paradigm is one of the top agencies in Hollywood representing such heavy weight as Andy Garcia, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Katherine Heigl. Talking with us today about their marriage of content and entertainment development is Joel Wright Vice President of Paradigm Relatively New Interactive Media Department. Joel Wright welcome to Dog and Pony. Joel Wright: Yes, how are you? Vince Thompson: Pleasure to have you here today. Joel Wright: Thanks for having me. Vince Thompson: Tells us about Paradigm, what sensitive part from the competitors. Joel Wright: Well, Paradigm is a unique agency on by Sam Gores up and coming probably the fastest growing agency in Hollywood. Kind of known in the industry as being a taste maker in the business as far as brining up young up and incoming talent quite like Katherine Heigl, Michael Cera. Full service agency in all areas of the business and I was recently brought in to start the newest area which is interactive media department. Vince Thompson: Tells us a little about that. Joel Wright: My department essentially is responsible for working with our client’s actors, writers, producers, musicians to develop and package original short from programming primarily for distribution on the internet. Vince Thompson: Are you building businesses as well, is that part of the future with what you're doing? Joel Wright: Absolutely, I mean I got very clear margin orders when I came in to start this department which was don’t limit yourself think big. Vince Thompson: How does interactivity the growth of the internet change the entertainment agency landscape? Joel Wright: You know I think it change it because it’s a new medium that has a significant reach against a target demographic that everybody is interested in whether it’s an advertiser or people that create entertainment and I think that as actors and writers and producers and musicians are looking to expand their business. It is a bible medium for them to do that end and I think now that it’s kind of guarded some main stream attention through in a more different initiatives whether its Martial Herch with quarter life or project we did for Michael Cera with callingmichael.com. You know they see as the bible platform to kind of express him selves mean they're artist after all. Entertainment 2.0 for me at least I think is about creating product for any screen for consumers in a fashion which they want to consume it. So I think it’s a process of education letting them know how to process works, let them know how to monetize content align through emerging platforms. And then just working with people that have a track record of success of building franchises in film in television and other areas and programming for new mediums. Vince Thompson: Now I’ll go on YouTube and sometimes we’ll find video upload by a celebrity or about a celebrity maybe a little skit or something fun they’ve done and maybe there are ten of 15 thousand views and then I'll find some kid from Colorado maybe at least or know about was over a million views per episode, right? Joel Wright: Right. Vince Thompson: How does this change the future of the entertainment? What is this mean for the traditional system? Joel Wright: Well, I think for me, I mean we’re much less interested in the kind of web celebrity so to speak because I think that that’s a needle in hay stack business. You know we represent brand so whether it’s Teri Hatcher, Philip Seymour Hoffman or Laurence Fishburne or the Dave Matthews Band. We’re on the brand building business. So as this business started to evolve I think what you're starting to see is real main stream actors and creators start to look at just t say. “Well, at least a I know I can get a million streams up a piece of content that right and probably not very good and even though I haven’t seen it—” Vince Thompson: She's actually pretty good. Joel Wright: Is she? Vince Thompson: Yeah. But I get the point. Joel Wright: Yeah, what can we do that would be meaningful so that we can reach our fans and our consumers. And so I think that the dynamic, I think what you're going to start to see is you know the majority of the stuff on YouTube that user generated this pretty bad. And I think that as high level show runner, high level writers start to migrate toward his business I think you're going to see the quality of the program and go up, I think you're going to see the eyeballs follow it and I think you're going to see content consumption continue to grow exponentially. Vince Thompson: Right. Joel Wright: So that— Vince Thompson: Hollywood talent set that it is filtered out some of the most creative people in the world it just doesn’t migrate the medium fasten up and that’s why we’re seeing some success among the general landscape, but from your viewpoint? Joel Wright: Yeah, I mean it’s early I mean I think that agents by nature are very transactional and I think what kind of makes Paradigm a little bit distinct especially my department is that we look at the business much more strategically. And it’s an education process that’s getting a lot of speed on how it works because most of them are extremely unfamiliar with it. Again, I think it’s about letting people know whether its plain advertisers or distribution partners that we have high level clients whether it’s a Marc Cherry or Joe Sernell or Neil Barry who are interested in developing this type of programming and because of their success in history and television film advertisers which is why we monetize content online have express significant interest on that. Vince Thompson: Joe Wright from Paradigm thank you very much it’s my pleasure having on Dog and Pony. Joel Wright: My pleasure. Vince Thompson: I'm Vince Thompson. If you have ideas for other guess please email me Vincentdogandpony.com. Thanks.
