Retirement Income Alternatives to Social Security Real Questions Joel: Hi my name is Joel. I’m from Dayton, Ohio I’m a Blue Collar worker who pays social security every week. I am curious what’s going to happen to my Social Security within the next 20 years and want to know what my alternatives are as far as a retirement income goes? Susan Feitelberg: Hi Joel. Its great that you are thinking about your future in social security and its on people’s minds today quite a bit. In order to protect yourself what I would recommend that you do is think of it as a three legged stool. The first leg is social security and count on about 40% for the typical Americans then monthly income coming from social security. The other two things that you could do is first maximize your contributions if you have a 401K or a 403b and also to any IRA that you can contribute to each year. And then the third leg of the stool are your personal savings so between your 401K and the personal savings you should be putting away between 10 and 15% of your gross income. The important thing to keep in mind is today’s retirees are receiving their full benefit at the age of 65. Since you were born after the year of 1960 your full benefit will be at the age of 67 so be sure to plan for that as well.
