REDWOOD CITY, Calif -- As more and more publishers seek broad distribution of their videos to other sites via an embed code, many advertisers raise concern over where that video and associated ad will play. YuMe, the Redwood City online video advertising technology company, has a new product to control where ads travel and to keep them off of some 500,000 blacklisted domains.

YuMe's Syndication Protection Technology We announced basically a proprietary brand safety technology that looks at where the video content that is being syndicated or embedded as plain and decides based on the location on the page, the URL of the page and the context of the content whether or not the ad is appropriate to be played in that. In a syndicated environment where content is going all over the place and not just playing on owned and operated sites, the advertisers have been asking us and requiring us to ensure safety of this environment. The way we like in this announcement is just like for people who have PC’s who run virus checkers on their PC’s, when they download an email or download new content, they just have software siting in the PC to check if things are safe. We have software sitting in all the video players to make sure that the advertisement sort of environment is safe. The brand security product that we just announced is part of the offering. Advertisers are advertising at YuMe Network when they advertise. The way it works is we have a piece of software code that’s embedded in all our platform customers, all our publisher partners. And based on that software, we are able to detect context, location and relevancy for the advertisement and we use proprietary algorithms to decide whether it’s relevant for the ad and safe for the ad because in a syndicated environment, the place where that content is playing changes and so, we’re able to detect that with our technology in the player in real time. On top of that, we’ve added thousands of blacklisted sites that have pornography and hate speech and things like that just to sort of weave those out from the top. We’ve also announced as part of this a sort of syndication quality score. We’ll provide feedback to the advertiser as well as the publisher and the content owner. The reason the ad didn’t play is this X, Y or Z and you should improve this or do this better and whatever and you’ll get more and more ads. So, this gives sort of a way for us to provide feedback to content owners about what they should do and what they shouldn’t do in a fairly sort of runtime manner so they can make their content quality and syndication experience more advertiser friendly. Our system is a proactive system that will prevent an ad from being played in an embedded environment in a video player as the content is being syndicated versus where existing systems tend to be reactive and report, where ads have already played in places where they shouldn’t have played. And so, it’s far more I think critical in a brand environment to make sure that the brand integrity is not compromised rather than reporting on it after the fact and saying “I won't do it again.”
