VIDEO TRANSCRIPT
Let us start this lesson by opening the same file, choose FILE, OPEN, and we will navigate to lesson five of part one of your project files. Inside the lesson five folder, you will find navigation.indd. Go ahead and select that file, click open and let us take a look at the pages panel for starters. Now, click the pages panel here on the right hand side and the pages panel is the first place that I would go to, to navigate pages. Now, remember that we have this tiny little page icons that are new in InDesign CS3 allowing us to see the content on the pages before we jump on this simple two page example that might not seem like a big deal but start working on a magazine or maybe long chapters of a book and this becomes really helpful. Now, to change pages here in the pages panel, all you have to do is double click one of the other pages and it is a really easy thing to switch pretty straight forward. Also, within the pages panel, we can actually re-sequence pages. If I want page one, actually after page two, I just drag that page, drag it down here to the right, you can see that insertion marker indicating where I am dropping it and now page one has the thumbnails, page two has the full page spread. I can reverse that just to see by dragging and dropping or just press CTRL Z to undo or command Z on the MAC. Now, let us dismiss the pages panel by clicking the tab here and looked at a couple of other ways to navigate between pages in InDesign document. Down here on the left corner of the document window, you have the pages pull down menu. This is another way to jump between pages and master pages. You can also just click and type in this field and one of my other favorite ways to jump between pages is just CTRL J, on the MAC, it is command J. That is for jump and if I am working with a really long document it is much easier to just jump to page 12 instead of scrolling up and down the long menu. So, I will click okay here. We will just stick to page one and now let us open the layers panel over on the right hand side of the monitor. Now, pages are just one aspect of the document but within those pages, there can be several layers. In this example, we have an images layer, a vectors layer and a type layer. In the far left column here, we have the ability to toggle the visibility of layers so I can turn on and off the images layer, the vectors layer, and if we jump to page two, you can see we can also toggle the visibility of the type layer. This is allowing us to navigate within the layers of the document. If I have some layers inside this document that I do not want to inadvertently change I can click the second column here and lock those layers. Now, with my selection tool active, no matter how many times I click I cannot these objects because they are on a lock layer. To unlock those, again just click that lock icon.
